Janice Sluder currently resides in Hernando, Mississippi. Her medium of choice is oil. Although she is primarily self taught, she credits her art instructors Mary Nevels of Memphis and Hank Burkhart of Olive Branch for their inspired teachings, guidance and encouragement. Janice was born and raised in lower Michigan. As a child, Janice was inspired by her grandmother and great grandmother who were both artists. Her grandmother was an accomplished artist and her work was well known and published in Michigan. Janice earned an art scholarship to Michigan State University in 1969, but regretfully was unable to attend.
Janice married and moved to Memphis, TN in 1969 to start her family and career with the IRS. Always loving art, she dabbled in acrylics and then attended an oil painting class in the late 1980’s from a well known local artist Mary Nevels. She did not paint again until she retired from IRS in May 2008 and has been attending oil painting classes at the Olive Branch Library under the remarkable instructor, Hank Burkhart.
